How to clean and store your magnetic mesh net during winter

Mesh in an Indian doorway collects three things: road dust, kitchen aerosol, and the fine grit that monsoon wind throws at the grill. Magnets still work under dust. They work worse when the fabric is stiff with oil.

You do not need a service person. You need a bucket.

Take it down without tearing Velcro

Start from a top corner. Peel Velcro slowly along the frame, not straight out. If you used push pins on wood, pull those first. Keep the magnet line from snapping onto a steel gate while it is in your hands — it pinches.

Lay the net flat on a clean floor. Shake outdoors. Do not beat it on the compound wall; that stretches the magnet tape.

Wash

Fill a bucket with tap water and a cap of mild dish soap or fabric detergent. No bleach. No phenyl. No hot water.

Dip and swish. For kitchen nets, pay attention to the lower third. Do not wring the magnet strip. Press water out with your palms.

Rinse twice until the water is not grey.

Dry

Hang on a shaded clothesline or over two chairs. Direct noon sun on cheap magnet tape makes it brittle over seasons. Maharashtra winter sun at 4 pm is fine. Do not tumble dry. Do not iron.

When it is fully dry, walk the magnet line with your fingers. If two magnets have flipped and repel, fold the strip back so north-south meet again. That is a two-minute fix people skip, then they say “magnets died”.

Store for winter or a long trip

If you close the house and go to the village for a month, or you simply prefer a shut wooden door in December:

• Fold along the height, magnet line inside, like a newspaper — not a tight ball.
• Slide into the original packet or a pillowcase. Add a silica pouch if you have one.
• Keep it off the floor in a steel cupboard, not the wet bathroom slab.

Do not store it pressed under mattresses. Magnets that sit twisted for months meet badly when you put the net back.

When to replace, not wash

If the mesh has a hole at pet height, wash will not close it. If Velcro has no grip left because the frame paint powdered off, reclean the frame and use fresh tape — the kit’s spare strip, or a new net if the fabric is torn.

A clean net also looks like you maintain the house. That is not vanity. Guests walk through it first.

When you hang it again, measure if you switched doors. Same product, different opening.
