Velcro vs framed mosquito nets: which is better for Indian homes?

Hardware shops will sell you both. One is a rigid aluminium slider. The other is a fabric mesh with magnets and Velcro. They are not competitors for the same hole in the wall.

If the opening is a window you rarely crawl through, a framed slider is clean. If the opening is a door you use with groceries, a child, or a gas cylinder, framed kits get left open and then you have no barrier at all.

Framed nets — where they earn their keep

A framed mosquito shutter runs in a track. You slide it like a window. Good for:

• Bedroom windows with a consistent aluminium channel
• Balcony sliders you close at night and leave
• Offices that want a “fitted” look

They fail on main doors because you must remember to close the slider. Guests do not. Kids do not. Delivery people do not. One open slider at 7 pm is a full evening of mosquitoes.

Tracks also silt up in Maharashtra dust and monsoon grit. You will oil them twice a year or they jam.

Magnetic Velcro mesh — the door product

A magnetic door net hangs on the frame. You walk through. Magnets in the centre close the slit. You do not operate a handle.

That is the right tool for:

• Hall doors onto a verandah

Velcro is the mount, not the insect barrier. The mesh and the magnet line do the work. If the Velcro is stuck to a greasy frame, the whole thing sags in a month. Clean the frame. That is the entire “installation skill”.

Mesh is not AC. It is ventilation with a filter. A framed glass-plus-mesh unit can be denser; a door mesh is meant to disappear when you walk. Pets learn the centre line in a day. If a dog charges the panel, magnets reopen and shut. A framed slider in the same situation gets knocked off its track.

Aesthetics: framed looks more “carpenter”. Magnetic mesh looks like a net because it is a net. In a Sambhajinagar or Thane flat, people choose the thing they will actually use at 6:30 pm, not the thing that photographs like joinery.

Cost and service

A custom aluminium frame is a site visit and a week. A magnetic net is a prepaid SKU with a tape measure. If the size is wrong, you exchange the unused piece. You do not wait for a fabricator to recut a track.
